ImageReady was the animated GIF editor of the creative suite, but has been discontinued for CS3 and above. Photoshop CS3 wont import the layers and timelines of animated GIFs. Adobe wants you to pony up for Fireworks for the ability to open animated GIFs.(via)
But there is a simpler way to open animated GIFs in Photoshop.
I came across these via the Firewalker blog at Photoshop CS3 Can Still Open Animated GIF Properly in Windows. He dug them up from the Adobe Forums.
Choose File » Import » Video Frames to Layers
In the file browser in Windows, type *.* in the File Name and press Enter or click Load.
It will not open any file, but it will view every file without restriction of Type of Files.
Open your animated GIF files, it will show you a dialog box regarding the imports. Press OK to import as default.
Voila! The file is opened in animation frames. You can view the animation frames from Windows » Animation
And for Photoshop CS3 on Mac OSX
Change the animated GIF file you want to open into .MOV file.
Therefore the Import Video Frames to Layers function will recognize it as a video file and will open it as animated sequence.
However, this method won’t always works and the quality of the file is questionable.
If you found this useful, you can thank Firewalker at http://firewalker.kamusilmiah.com/photosh… for digging this up from the adobe forums.

Thanks a lot!!
Apparently, Apple calls the shots and requests QT 7 with this method… more apps to download, thanks a lot Adobe. Beats shelling out more money though, but it truly bothers me that CS3 is an ultra expensive version and we lose out on Image Ready. *shrugs*
Thanks for blogging this tip and others.
In CS3 open animated gifs with Fireworks
thanks for the info !!!
You are very welcome. Glad I could help
Adobe changed that stuff over to fireworks with CS3 I think. Possibly CS2.
Thank you SOOO much!
- so crap how they did that!!!!
thank you very much.
this is the answer i’ve been looking for.
This explains a lot. Thanks for posting the solution!
now i have 299 layers… how the fuck do i make them animated lol
A really big thanks
awesome job what a breakthrough that was!!!
On Mac OSX: Drop the gif file on Quicktime Player (Pro), choose select all, export, movie to images. Result: Nice PNG-files from every frame!
In the Import dialog, you can just type the name of the file for example abc.gif and then PTS will open it ^^
Thank u
Thank you very much xD
ON A MAC:
I just opened the GIF file in Preview and was able to drag and drop the frames right to my desktop.
I can’t believe it was that easy after trying all these other options. Isn’t Photoshop supposed to make my life easier.
Cheers!
I cant believe this… Have Adobe sorted this in CS4?
Jason/archetype thanks for the MAC tip! awesome.
So Preview now does for free which Photoshop doesn’t do any more! Great.

@ jason/archetype:
None of the stuff in this article worked (I’m on a mac) so when I saw your comment and tried it, it worked, and I realized YOU’RE GOD. THANK YOU FOR SAYING SOMETHING. <3
Photoshop can suck it~
In windows instead of “.” and load it’s actuall “*” and load. This will display all your files like Ayush says.
I’m so glad I found this post, thanks Ayush!!!!!

Thanks very much! I got so upset when I noticed I couldn’t open animated gifs.
Hellz yeah! Thanks for the help!
YEEEEEEES!! This was extremely helpful.
but there’s a catch - ps cs3 does NOT read alpha from the GIF - e.g. transparent backgrounds get destroyed.
Awesome solution!
But how do you import a gif with a transparent background and keep it that way? When i import the backgropund turns to white.
Thanks
Thanks Man Great SOLUTION!!!
What the heck is Fireworks? Well I’m off to mininova to find out….
when I click on Import it only shows me Variabe Date, Notes and WIA Support
Any ideas what could be wrong?:D

Thanks for the tip!
Haven’t fooled around too much with it, but on my first go for some reason it imported all 6 layers as exactly the same…. anyone have this issue? On windows xp. +CS3
Mac OSX and CS3 Extendet…
File / Open / Use Adobe Dialog / Open OS Dialogs on Photoshop Raw-Change Quick Time Movie -Chose item(.gif) Animation Timeline-Flatten Frame into Layers / select all layers and Make frames From Layers
I was wondering how to do it now, with ImageReady taken out!
Fine, it works with “*”, but you don’t say how to save it back into an animated gif from Photoshop… or am I missing something.

NICE! I’m using CS4. Works great!
Huh? I have CS4 and File -> Import -> there is no Video Frames to Layers. I’m completely baffled why no one else has this problem. But it’s just simply not there…
Like several of the folks above, I have CS4 and File -> Import -> there is no Video Frames to Layers.
I installed apple quacktime but it made no difference.
Any suggestions?
To do it in CS4, you need to open the 32 bit version of it.
View my Youtube Tutorial (clicking my name should take you there).
I’m troubled by the no transparent background though. Used to work for me, I think.
Man.. you saved my day.. thanks alot..
